The Illumination Project on 8-8-8
A Collaboration of Artists, Shadows, and Light

THANK YOU to everyone who showed up and played on 8-8-8!
Despite threatening skies and lack of moonlight, we were able to improvise and capture some great, fun footage.  The plan now is to process, edit, and submit a short video for an upcoming Film Festival in Moab, Utah.

Sunset:  8:28pm    Moonset:  12:05 (Aug 9, 08)
The Quarter Moon will illuminate the outdoor stage for dancing.
It will also be dark enough to use External Light Sources to cast bold shadows.

A Time Lapse video created during this time may also incorporate the movement and setting of the moon in the western sky.

Chris' suggestion:  Camping at the site and photographing at least 2 nights in a row.
This set is a 40 minute drive from Moab, allowing participants to return to town if necessary between shoots.

Potential Stages, Camping Areas, and other information are shown below:

This is a wide view of a large stage area.  Stage is a 2 Minute walk down steep terrain from the parking area.

A small stage only 100 feet from the parking area.

A small, but great stage 2 minute walk from the parking area.

Camping is available. Parking is limited, but adequate.

High Clearance vehicles are recommended, but the 0.6 miles of 2-track are easy.  I drove my Toyota Corolla in just fine.

Ideas behind Illumination:

Working in subdued light, a photographer may leave the camera's shutter open for many seconds.
This time allows a dancer to "Paint" patterns, shapes, and movement with various Light Tools.

Above, the Full Moon casts a "Shadow-Man" while a dancer wields a lighted staff.  15 second exposure.

Chris Conrad and Krista Guss made the following observations in May 2008:

"Shadow-man" may interact with Light.

Shadow-Man can Dance, Change size, and Move within a "set".

Shadow-Man can manipulate and control the Light.

Sequences of images are photographed, then merged into a Video sequence.

How will Shadow-Man morph and grow?  Is Shadow-Man only a shadow, or will he emerge into Reality?

That's up to YOU, the dancers and participants.

See you in August!
